Hose Bend Radius Essentials",
 "Post Date": 1586870542

A hose’s bend radius determines how long a hose needs to be before it can safely bend while in service. Understanding bend radius helps ensure a hose will have the necessary strength and functionality for its intended use case. Failing to account for bend radius limits will ultimately cause damage to hoses and shorten their usable service life.

What is Bend Radius?

The minimum bend radius represents the minimum distance a hose can be bent without causing lasting damage. There are two different ways to measure minimum bend radius—inside radius or centerline radius.

Inside radius measures the radius of the bent hose to its innermost surface.

Centerline radius measures the radius to the centerline of the hose or flexible duct.

At Flexaust, we use the centerline bend radius method of measurement when determining appropriate hose lengths.

Most hoses must bend frequently throughout their service life, so accounting for flexibility requirements ahead of time often saves a great deal of hassle in the long run. Bending a hose more sharply than its design permits places undue stress on its reinforcements. This may cause kinking and distortions in the hose, which will noticeably decrease its life and functionality. Additionally, over-bending a hose can easily restrict flow, leading to further complications.

To avoid these problems, users should calculate the minimum bend radius to determine the minimum length of hose required for a given application.

How to Calculate Bend Radius

The minimum bend radius formula is: L = A/360° x 2πr. The variables in this equation are defined as:

L: The minimum length of the hose that needs to bend

A: The angle of the bend

r: The bend radius of the hose

π: 3.14

Using this formula, the minimum required length of a hose can be determined for any situation. If, for example, a manufacturer needed a hose that could bend at 45° and had a bend radius of three inches, then the minimum length of hose needed would equal 45°/360° x 2(3.14)(3), or 2.355 inches.

Work With Flexaust

Understanding how to calculate bend radius during hose selection makes it easier to choose an appropriate length of hose. By taking the time to make these calculations upfront, users will ensure optimal functionality and service life from their hoses.

At Flexaust, our team can help customers determine the most appropriate hose type and length for specific applications.
How to Choose the Right Vacuum Kit for Your Applications",
 "Post Date": 1556037122

Dirt, dust, grime, wood shavings and wet and dry messes on floors can cause accidents and even explosions in industrial settings.

Effective cleaning and maintenance is one-part meticulousness (make cleaning a habit instead of an afterthought), and one-part having the right equipment. The right vacuum kit will help you keep your facility clean and free of debris.

Selecting the Right Vacuum Kit for Your Applications

Vacuum kits are comprised of:

Hose and ducting

Cuffs and connectors

Extendable wands

Floor tools

Utility attachments like upholstery tools, dust brushes and pick up nozzles

But not all elements are made equal.

Hoses must be selected on the basis of their size, the temperatures they can handle, the media they can accommodate (will it be wood shavings, dust or lint?), the pressure they can bear and finally the application in which they’re cleared for use.

Cuffs, connectors and adapters are made of plastic, chrome steel or aluminium. Variants are also identified for the type of coupling they offer.

The floor and utility tools are differentiated on the basis of their ability to pick up wet and dry debris from carpeted, smooth or rough surfaces and from nooks or crevices.

To guarantee a generous return on cleaning equipment investments, a fair bit of decision making is required. To make things easier, vacuum kits are available to complement motor power and application type.

Kit Choices from Flexaust:

Flexaust is a leader in custom hose manufacturing. This year, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association expects RV shipments to reach their highest levels yet. The two major RV manufacturers in the US, Thor Industries and Winnebago Industries, each saw remarkable growth of more than 50% over last year. This is largely due to recent major acquisitions by both companies. But even so, what’s driving more buyers to purchase RVs?

The Millennial Market

The trend toward living small has been gaining popularity among young people in recent years, which could be a factor in RV growth. With real estate values continuing to rise, mobile housing options provide a unique alternative.

The Millennial generation also seems to be fond of outdoor living, comprising 38% of campers, though they only represent 31% of the general population. Having an RV makes planning a vacation relatively simple – pick a destination and drive there. No need to squeeze into a tight-fitting car, or set aside most of your vacation budget for a hotel. For people who travel frequently, bringing your own accommodations is a major cost savings.

Modern Conveniences

Among the trends driving this sector forward, smaller, towable models are seeing increased popularity. Trailers are now being made with lighter materials which often serve a dual purpose – thinner walls cut down on wasted space while reducing weight. This allows them to be hauled with a standard minivan or truck rather than a heavy-duty vehicle.

RV water systems have also come a long way in providing a more home-like experience for travelers. With three types of water systems included in modern vehicles (potable drinking water, gray water from sinks and showers, and black water systems from toilets), the experience is much more hygienic today.

WiFi and cable accessibility is another factor manufacturers and campgrounds must consider to attract buyers. People have a hard time disconnecting from their devices, so it’s important they won’t have to sacrifice these services on the road.

Changing Needs

New buyers are more likely to purchase a smaller, less expensive model to start. As their families grow with children and friends, owners are likely to upgrade to a larger option, before eventually downsizing during retirement. One RV owner may therefore purchase multiple models throughout their lifetime, making it ideal to hook them while they’re young.

With demand for recreational vehicles continuing to rise for nearly a decade already, the industry is showing no sign of slowing down.

Choosing the correct hose is vital to make sure it will meet the needs of an intended application. Recently our blogs have looked at why it is important to choose the correct flexible hose as well as what static conductive and static dissipative flexible hose means. In this blog we will look at the importance of high-temperature hoses and the applications they are used for.

There are a number of factors to consider when setting up rental tents – and ensuring the comfort and safety of guests is a top concern. For this reason, many tents come equipped with portable, temporary ductwork to provide necessary air conditioning, dehumidification, and/or heat.

There are a number of factors to consider when setting up rental tents – and ensuring the comfort and safety of guests is a top concern. For this reason, many tents come equipped with portable, temporary ductwork to provide necessary air conditioning, dehumidification, and/or heat.

Whereas HVAC systems in a permanent building consist of durable pipes, however, pop-up structures such as tents require a more flexible option.

Heavy-duty temporary cooling ducts provide durability while allowing for potential movement and compression. Flexaust’s FX-180 stitched ducting is ideal for commercial and industrial tent rentals for a number of reasons. It features rip stop technology and a PVC wear strip for added protection. There is also a high tensile spring wire that protects the duct from crushing.

In high-traffic areas, crush-resistance is a major benefit for cooling ducts since people may unknowingly walk or drive over the ducting. This feature allows for optimum air flow despite these conditions.

In addition, people may need to drag the duct to another area to keep it out of the way; using a fabric duct will make this easier without compromising the material’s integrity. And because most rental tents are set up outdoors, moisture resistance, UV, and heat resistance are important considerations. Products such as the FX-180 ducting and our FX-400 resist UV rays and are flame retardant to ASTMD6413.

The FX-180 is a PVC coated polyester hose with a spring steel wire helix reinforcement. It was specifically designed for positive airflow applications such as those required for temporary HVAC systems. It has an operational temperature range from -20°F to 180°F, and meets NFPA-701 standards for flame resistance. This makes it ideal for providing temporary air conditioning and heat in most rental spaces.

The FX-400 offers superior abrasion and tear resistance, in addition to chemical, fuel, and oil resistance. Depending on the location and application of the tent setup, it may be beneficial to have this added layer of protection for ducting.

We also have ducting options that can operate in temperatures ranging from -65°F to 550°F, so there are many options and factors to consider when choosing the right product. Depending on the venue and other considerations, the hoses can even be customized with different colors, sizes, and lengths. And just as rental tents are often collapsible, these fabric cooling ducts are also compressible for convenient storage.

If you’d like to learn more about our full line of portable cooling ducts for large rental venues, feel free to contact us for additional information. We look forward to reviewing your application and coming up with the right solution to fit your needs.

The Importance of High Temperature Hoses",
 "Post Date": 1502897979

What Are High Temperature Hoses?

High temperature hoses are made to withstand a variety of temperature ranges to meet the needs of specific applications. The materials used to manufacture these types of hose are often durable and have excellent heat stability to be able to withstand the high temperatures in the environments they are being used in. Determining the maximum temperature to which a hose will be exposed to is important to make sure it will be the correct fit for your application.

High temperature hoses that work for a variety of applications include our Flex-Lok line which is made from materials which are locked around a galvanized or stainless steel metal clip and mechanically crimped in a continuous process. They are designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -65 degrees to 1200 degrees depending on the version. With excellent durability and heat stability, they are often used for vehicle exhaust systems which require a reliable hose system. Our Heat-Flex line also is made for high temperature applications like drying systems, pollution control and the plastics industry, as well as other high temperature environments.

Where Are High Temperature Hoses Used?

High temperature hoses are perfect for use in areas like bus depot maintenance facilities, mass transit authorities, military vehicle maintenance facilities, OEM-vehicle exhaust, heavy equipment maintenance, engine test stand applications, portable heaters, high end HVAC applications, and even pavement drying. Facilities like foundries and applications like dryer systems and furnaces also require high temperature hoses. These areas require durable hose that will be able to handle the high temperature demands. Choosing hose that is not designed to high temperature specifications can lead to hose failure, which could then lead to injuries, and other serious hazards.

Static Conductive and Static Dissipative Flexible Hose",
 "Post Date": 1501604271

In one of our most recent blogs we went over why is it important to choose the correct flexible hose, and listed some of the critical factors that should be considered when making that decision. Another factor that it important when choosing the right flexible hose to meet your requirements is electrical conductivity and static resistance. If a hose with the wrong electrical resistance rating is chosen, the potential for static sparks that could interact with dust particles and set off fire or explosions increases. To help decide which hose is appropriate for a specific situation, many times they are labeled as static conductive or static dissipative based on the materials used to make them.

What is Static Conductive?

Static conductive refers to the capability of a material to be able to assist the path of static electricity and prevent static from building up. As material moves though a hose, molecules collide with each other and can potentially create a small electric charge, or static. If non conductive hose is used, the electrical charge formed from this molecule collision will build up in the hose fitting at the end of the hose. Depending on the location of the hose, this could potentially lead to a spark that could lead to an explosion or fire. Choosing the correct hose made out of the right material is very important for flexible hoses in areas where electrical conductivity is demanded, in industrial vacuum cleaners, and as a protection hose against mechanical damage among other applications.

What is Static Dissipative?

Static dissipative refers to materials that are designed to help mitigate static electricity. Charges flow to ground more slowly and in a more controlled manner using dissipative materials compared to conductive. These materials will not generate a potential hazardous charge while also grounding many potentially hazardous charges. Typically these materials are certified to meet electronic industry standards and used for sensitive electronics. Static dissipating hoses will dissipate static electricity through the rubber material to the hose ends. By using static dissipative materials you can reduce the risk of producing a charge while protecting against existing charges as well.

Dust Explosions From Electrical Sparks

The combination of dust, an ignition source and oxygen in the air is the recipe needed to initiate a dust explosion. Confusion over when to use a static conductive or static dissipative material for an application can provide this ignition source when electrical sparks are created. OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has put information together on combustible dust explosions which explains how these explosions occur, what industries are at risk and how to prevent them. By monitoring the materials handled, the operations conducted, and the potential ignition sources, it is possible to prevent dust explosions from occurring.

Flexaust and Static Control Flexible Hoses

At Flexaust we offer a full selection of static control flexible hoses to meet your requirements. Our sales and support team can assist in making sure you choose the right Flexaust hose.

Dangers of Welding Fumes in the Workplace",
 "Post Date": 1501173834

Welding continues to be an excellent career choice, as the demand continues to rise with the older generation aging out of the workforce. Filling these positions is a concern, while welding shops and business continue to grow. With this sort of turnover and growth, one of the primary areas that needs to be paid attention to is safety. The hazards for welders can be high, and individuals and companies have to meet these safety issues head-on.

Hazards in Welding Areas
There are obvious hazards in welding areas that are easy to identify, even for non-welder – the flammability hazards from the flying sparks, the dangers to vision from debris and bright light, the hearing concerns from the noise. However, potentially the biggest hazard is much harder to identify, as it can’t be seen or heard.
The burning of gas and melting of metal in welding creates airborne metal fumes that contain a wide range of elements. Metals such as aluminum, arsenic and lead, and gases such as argon, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide and phosgene all meld together in a potentially toxic yet invisible cloud of welding fumes. Health effects of these can include:

• Eye, nose, and throat irritation, dizziness, and nausea from acute exposure
• Lung damage and various types of cancer including lung and larynx cancer from prolonged exposure
• Fume-specific health effects, such as Parkinson’s-like symptoms due to exposure to manganese fumes
• Potential suffocation hazard in confined or enclosed spaces
• Asphyxiation hazard from carbon monoxide

Reduction and Prevention of Fume-Related Dangers
With these potential hazards, welders need to have the right safety equipment, and to address fumes, the best course is to provide the best possible fume extraction system. Proper ventilation will allow for the removal and dissipation of these toxic fumes, and reduce the potential for short-term and long-term effects. If fume exposure cannot be reduced enough through ventilation, personal respiratory protection should also be incorporated.

Here at Flexaust, we are devoted to safety, and offer a lengthy catalogue of hoses for welding fume extraction. These allow for you to customize your ventilation system to fit the needs of your shop, the needs of your tasks, and your budget. Looking after your workers, both new workers and veterans, needs to be at the top of your list, and nothing demonstrates more of a commitment to their health and well-being than providing the safest possible welding space. Contact us today to help develop a solution for your welding spaces!

The Hazards of Grain Dust Accumulation",
 "Post Date": 1501087771

One of the significant aspects of the world economy is the grain trade. Grains make up a large portion of the world’s food supply, and there are many facilities devoted to grain handling. Within these grain facilities there are numerous occupational hazards that could be potentially dangerous to employees if they are not addressed.

Hazards Related to Grain Handling:

The US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have identified six main hazards related to grain handling. Of these, accumulation of combustible grain dust happens to be one of the most difficult to manage. The reason for this is because grain dust is fine, and due to this there are often no overt physical indicators of its accumulation. Also grain silo owners have a hard time quantifying the volume of dust that can prove to be adequate to create an explosion.

There are five factors that come together for an explosion:

1. Sufficient quantity of combustible grain dust dispersed in the air
2. The presence of an oxidant like oxygen to support the combustion
3. The agitation of the accumulated grain dust
4. An ignition source
5. Containment

Grain dust combustion causes secondary explosions. This means they are hard to predict and control. Often silos are demolished because of rogue explosions and the workers in the elevators and bins become casualties of the accident. In typical grain dust explosions the friction between moving parts of belts, conveyors and augers supplies the needed spark or ignition source.

How to Prevent Grain Dust Explosions?

From the grain dust explosion criteria it is easy to see that the actual production of combustible dust can’t be affected. It is a byproduct of grain handling. The source of ignition (or the moving parts) can’t be removed from the equation either. Thus it is important to take steps to eliminate the accumulation and confinement of the combustible dust particles through dust collection mechanisms and proper ventilation of bins. Employee training and education is also important to make sure all workers are aware of the hazards, and to ensure they don’t enter a bin or silo without the required safety equipment.

At Flexaust we have manufactured long lasting, flexible hose and ducting products for industrial and commercial applications for 75 years. Our products include hoses specifically designed for grain vac use, and ventilation systems. Safety is very important and Flexaust products are used around the world to help maintain clean air and cleanup industrial dust. Contact us to find out how we can provide the products to assist your grain dust accumulation needs.

Dust Threat in the Woodworking Industry",
 "Post Date": 1493297724

All manufacturing industries have workplace hazards, and the woodworking sector is no different. Even though the raw material in this instance is completely natural, the various processes involved in cutting, turning, sanding and shaping the wood lead to the production of large volumes of dust which is a marked problem for the safety of workers as well as the factory in general.

Beware of Wood Dust!

Although non-toxic, wood dust is something that logging and sawing mills can’t overlook. Suspended particles in the air may cause a plethora of health problems for those who inhale them regularly.

As per OSHA mandates, the permissible exposure limit is 15 mg/m3 over an eight hour weighted average. Anything more and employees are at risk of nasal and respiratory tract obstructions, dermatitis, allergic reactions and prolonged colds.

Most factories require air blown at very high speed to brush off the wood dust from the surface of finished products, and in the absence of effective collection and adequate ventilation, any stray sparking could lead to the combustion of the dust clouds that hover over the equipment. Wood particles are highly combustible and the intensity of the resulting fire often causes considerable damage to life and property.

The wood dust on the factory floor is another cause of concern. It reduces traction and causes workers to slip and fall leading to injury if not properly maintained.

A New Solution

Commonly dust collection duct work and exhaust systems are recommended as a possible solution for wood work factories. But these measures are not fool proof. Hoses that are abrasion resistant tend to be quite thick and unwieldy. They take up a lot of floor space and are costly to install. Moreover translucent plastic gets murky and the wood dust is lodged in the grooves of the hoses reducing their ability to collect and dispose the offending particles.

At Flexaust we have introduced an alternative to traditional dust hoses. Our new polyurethane Flx-Thane series hose line, available in five wall thicknesses, is up to the tasks of both light collection and heavy duty cleaning. The material is strong and flexible, possessing excellent tear strength. The light weight hose is reinforced with a bronze coated spring steel wire helix, and can be accommodated in the most congested working spaces. It is also completely transparent allowing users to gauge their effectiveness and conduct emergency cleaning if necessary to bump up the capacity.

If you are interested in learning more about our products, or you would like to order a sample, please contact us here.

Why is it Important to choose the Right Flexible Hose?",
 "Post Date": 1479833731

A common misconception is that any flexible hose can be used for any application. In actuality different types of flexible hose are designed to meet the needs of different applications. This makes it extremely important that the correct hose is chosen to meet the needs of the task you are trying to achieve. Choosing the wrong hose could lead to safety hazards and problems like increased expenses and lost production time depending on the industry.

Below are five critical factors that will help determine the correct hose:
1. Size: It is important to choose a hose with the correct inside diameter (I.D.) and length to meet the application it is being used for. Incorrect sizing can lead to clogs and backups if the hose cannot meet the demands of the air, dust, fume and lightweight materials that will be passing through it.
2. Temperature: Choosing a hose with the right qualified temperature rating is important. Choosing incorrectly can lead to hard and brittle hose that may crack or melt. Internal temperatures and temperature impact on the material being conveyed should be factored in when determining which hose to use.
3. Application: What the hose will be conveying is vital when determining the proper hose. Specifying if air, fume, dust and/or light weight materials will be flowing through the hose will help determine the correct product. The conditions the hose will be located in, how often it will be used, does it need to meet government or industrial standard requirements are all important in determining the correct hose application.
4.Media: By determining what media will be going through the hose, the correct material can be selected. Selection choices include hoses manufactured with FDA accepted materials, to hoses that are flame retardant and meet standards like UL 94V-0.
5. Pressure: Specifying the type of pressure from Positive (psi), Negative (inches Hg.) and or Inches w.g. will help narrow down hose choices. Determining factors like working pressure will prevent the hose from bursting.
At Flexaust we have manufactured flexible hose and flexible ducting products for industrial applications for 75 years. Our Market Applications page will help you choose the proper hose that can meet almost any application involving air, fume dust, and light material handling applications. Contact us here if you have any questions on which is the correct hose to meet your needs.

",

 "Post Date": 1476119167

Municipalities and Towns: When it’s time for autumn cleanup, municipalities and towns have one of the hardest jobs due to the large areas they are responsible for cleaning up. From cleaning roads and streets, to public parks and plazas, large amounts of leaves must be collected and disposed of in a short period of time. To do this heavy-duty, commercial grade equipment is used to collect the largest amount of leaves possible at one time, while being durable enough to withstand the high volume of use. We offer heavy weight polyurethane hose that can be used with municipal loaders, and are ideal for leaf and debris collection. Check out more information on our Flx-Thane HD and Flx-Thane VHD hoses.

Commercial and Landscaping: Many commercial land owners have large business parks that need to be cleaned of leaves for their tenants. This includes making sure sidewalks and walkways are clear to prevent any potential injuries from slippage, and making sure parking lots and spots are clear. Using landscaping services for commercial properties, they require flexible and heavy duty hose that will be compatible with their truck loaders. At Flexaust we offer different options of flexible hose that work great in outdoor environments including our Flexadux LCDC and Flexadux HT-W hoses which are designed with leaf collection in mind for commercial landscaping operations.

Residential: All residential home owners understand the mess that leaves can make when they pile up on lawns and sidewalks. Removing fallen leaves and debris from lawns and gardens is important to keep them healthy and growing. Leaf backup in gutters and on roofs could cause clogs and water backup which could lead to unnecessary damage. Collecting the leaves using a tractor vacuum is one of the easiest ways to do a full yard cleanup. Our flexible hoses are made to fit tractor vacuums, are available in different lengths, and designed for outdoor use to meet leaf collection needs.
Construction Industry Hazards",
 "Post Date": 1474541484

The construction industry can be dangerous for workers if the correct precautions are not taken. Potential hazards construction workers may face include exposure to harmful chemicals, harmful air quality and dust buildup among many others. In an effort to limit and reduce these threats to worker’s safety, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has put together rules and regulations to assure safe and healthful working conditions for employees in the construction field. Below are some specific construction applications where flexible hose and ducting can assist in the safety process.

Bridge Cleaning and Painting

Many steel bridges painted before 1980 used paint coatings that contained toxic materials such as lead, cadmium and chromium. At the time they were used to protect the steel from breaking down in harsh conditions and to extend their lifespan. During repainting jobs and maintenance work, construction workers can be exposed to these harmful chemical additives. To prevent this exposure, exhaust ventilation systems should be used to capture the dust within the enclosure. Ducting should also be used to draw the harmful chemical additive dust away, and to bring fresh air into the work area. OSHA has a Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) and requires construction employers to protect their workers to exposure to these hazardous substances.

Underground Construction

When performing construction work underground, in manholes and other areas, the space can be very limited. Often these areas have limited means of entry and exit, and are not designed for continuous occupancy. The atmosphere of the enclosed environment could contain toxic chemicals, and could be oxygen-deficient. OSHA requires ventilation systems, including explosion-proof blowers and a minimum of 15-foot of duct to receive a permit to work in these environments. Using blowers and ducts should ensure clean air stays in the working environment, and protect the health of the workers.

Flexaust Products for the Construction Industry

At Flexaust we manufacture and supply ducting and flexible hose for the construction industry. Products like our FSP Bridge industrial hose are manufactured with bridge cleaning filtering in mind. For blower duct use we offer the FX-180 and FX-400 lines to assist in your ventilation system needs. These lines work great in outdoors conditions because that are moisture resistant and UV stabilized to prevent mold and mildew. Our FX-550 is great for heater hose when pouring concrete floors as the weather gets colder as it is able to maintain flexibility in cold weather conditions. The construction industry requires the proper tools to face the dangerous conditions that some jobs may require, and at Flexaust we have the products and knowledge to assist. Contact us to learn more how we can help meet your construction safety needs.

National Safety Month",
 "Post Date": 1469719605

Workplace safety should always be on our minds. Many of us spend one-third or more of our day at work, with it coming in only behind your home as where you spend the most time. Every work place should strive to provide the safest working conditions possible, but not everyone keeps it in the front of their minds. This is where National Safety Month comes in.

National Safety Month
Every June, the National Safety Council celebrates National Safety Month, helping to bring awareness to the safety issues that are faced not only in the workplace, but also in the home, community, and out on the road ways. These issues can range from clear and easy-to recognize issues, to more complicated that are not as easy to fix. National Safety Month serves a reminder that we need to focus more on safety. During the month, the Council provides a variety of resources that can be printed out, posted, handed out, or otherwise disseminated to the work force. From safety checklists, to online webinars, the National Safety Council provides all the tools needed to help promote National Safety Month.

Flexaust and Safety
Flexaust products are used around the world to help maintain clean air and to help remove static from the atmosphere. This is particularly important in areas where fumes can build up or can be dangerous, helping to remove particulates from the working environment. Indoor air quality is an often-overlooked part of the safety of an environment, but you should be able to be confident that the air you are breathing in all day is not going to damage your respiratory system. They also help to remove static from the air, another safety issues that is often overlooked, helping to avoid static shock or static damage to sensitive components.

Using the right hose for the job is important, which is why utilizing color-coding is important. You don’t want to connect the wrong hoses for incorrect purposes, so having custom-colored hoses allows you to ensure that the proper connections are made. After all, you don’t want your exhaust hose to flow into a part of the system that pushes it back into the work space. At Flexaust we offer color choices for our hoses to help you design your setup to be as safe as possible.

So join us at Flexaust in observing National Safety Month. We will utilize this time to improve on our in-house safety, and increase or daily efforts to provide a clean, safe workplace for our employees. If air quality is on your checklist for safety improvements, make sure to contact us here at Flexaust to find out how we can provide top-notch hoses and more for your exhaust needs.

The Hazards of Combustible Dust",
 "Post Date": 1454074317

What is a potentially dangerous, yet common appearance in your factory, coal mine, manufacturing facility or warehouse? The answer is the buildup of dust. Dust in the industrial environment has the added threat of becoming combustible dust, which in the right conditions could cause an explosion and fire. The threat of explosion grows as dust builds up on flat surfaces such as rafters, ducts, and inside crevices. All it would take is a small spark to trigger an explosion that could cause a lot of damage.

What is Combustible Dust and How do Dust Explosions Occur?

Combustible dust is any fine material or substance that has the ability to catch fire and explode when mixed with oxygen. When there is a collection of dust particles in a sufficient quantity and concentration, deflagration occurs. Deflagration is the rapid combustion that causes an explosion. Often the initial explosion causes more dust to accumulate into the air by damaging ducts or dust collection systems. This can cause a secondary dust explosion, often more destructive than the first due to the large concentration of dust.

What Materials Cause Combustible Dust?

The source material for combustible dust explosions historically have included wood flour, metal powder, sugar dust, polyethylene dust, grain dust and coal dust. Other materials that could become combustible dust include agricultural products, agricultural dusts, carbonaceous dusts, chemical dusts, metal dusts and plastic dusts. Industries and workplaces in which dust explosions are likely to occur include the woodworking, food, chemical, metal, plastics/rubber and utility industries as well as grain elevators, recycling facilities and coal–fired plants.

How Can Combustible Dust Explosions Be Prevented?

OSHA, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration has federally mandated workplace standards which include language to fight combustible dust hazards. These standards contain regulations for walking and working surfaces, general environmental controls, materials handling and storage, and toxic and hazardous substances. OSHA also offers recommendations for dust control, ignition control, and injury and damage control methods. By performing a hazard assessment of your facility on a regular basis, the potential for a combustible dust explosion can be lowered.

Also important is to make sure dust does not accumulate on any horizontal surfaces such as window ledges or light fittings, or in areas where dust could accumulate unnoticed. Another preventative measure is for your facility to have dust collection systems designed specifically to control dust. These systems are important in helping to maintain a dust-free environment. Vacuum cleaners that are specifically approved for dust collection are the only ones that should be used. A facility should also have a housekeeping program with regular cleaning schedules and inspections to try and minimize dust accumulation.

",
